The original meaning of “chai” is “tea” in the Hindi language and “masala” means “spiced”. Dating back thousands of years in India, the traditional chai tea was just a blend of healing spices. When the British colonized the country, they added the Western combination of black tea, milk and sugar, transforming the simple “masala chai” into what we now describe as a “chai”.
