We encourage you to experiment with brewing styles and methods to find what you like best! These are some suggested guidelines based on the Western Brewing Method that we would recommend for anyone getting started with rooibos tea.
- Add 1 teaspoon tea per 6 oz. cup to your infuser / pot.
- Pour boiling water over tea (212°F).
- Steep for at least 5-8 minutes.
Rooibos Tea
Rooibos, also known as red bush tea, is a plant native to South Africa, specifically the mountainous regions of Western Cape province. Its history dates back thousands of years, where the indigenous Khoisan people were known to have harvested the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant, from which rooibos is made. They discovered that after chopping the plant's stems and leaves, leaving them to ferment in heaps, and then drying them under the African sun, they could create a flavorful, aromatic beverage. Rooibos tea only became globally popular in the 20th century when it was introduced to the world market as an alternative to black tea. Its cultivation became more widespread due to its distinctive taste, caffeine-free nature, and associated health benefits.

Rich in Antioxidants
Rooibos tea is loaded with powerful antioxidants such as aspalathin and quercetin, which can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. These antioxidants have the potential to protect cells from damage by harmful free radicals. (1)
Supports Heart Health
Research suggests that rooibos tea can improve heart health by positively influencing blood pressure and circulation. It does so by suppressing the ACE enzyme, much like some heart medications. (2)
May Aid in Weight Management
The aspalathin in rooibos tea has been linked to reduced stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage, commonly associated with weight gain. Aspalathin's potential effects on weight management require further research but are promising. (3)

As a long time tea enthusiast, I found Open Door Tea while searching for higher end teas rather than the stuff you find in grocery stores. Open Door Tea is quickly becoming one of my favorite companies. While I was initially drawn to the company because of the little pictures of animals drinking tea on the tea tubes, I am really impressed with the quality of the teas themselves. There's no comparison to grocery store-bought stuff. These teas are incredible. I also really love the tea tubes, not only for the little aforementioned animals, but also for the little window through which you can see the tea leaves and ingredients. I look forward to trying more teas from Open Door!
Perfect for gift giving or a treat for yourself! I wanted to order a sample of each of their rooibos tea varieties, but was unable to find a listing for their Skin Radiance tea, so I ended up ordering this sampler in addition to seven other individual rooibos samples. My order shipped the same day and arrived perfectly packaged. This sampler comes as a cute box tied with a bow with a nice graphic explaining the contents on the bottom/back. The disposable tea bags worked great, no loose tea spilled out and clean up was as simple as tossing the used bag into my compost pail. This (or any of their other samplers) would be a wonderful gift for a tea lover or someone wanting to explore new teas. I really liked all the varieties I tried and I think the 5 in this sampler were fantastic and would be enjoyed by most rooibos fans!
